Angie, mother of StreetCode Academy student, shares how their 10 year old daughter has been inspired and motivated to pursue opportunities in tech through StreetCode Academy’s free online tech education courses.

Closing the gender diversity gap in the technology sector has been a long-drawn, yet historical process in the making. As we witness this influx of diversity, the need for inclusive representation of women leading in these tech spaces is at an all time high. In 2021 and beyond, creating equitable opportunities to encourage more and more women to enter the sector is more crucial than ever. Girls and women across the globe have always given major contributions to this space and are loudly disrupting the “bro culture” of tech.

Angie, mother of StreetCode student, highlights the positive impact that StreetCode courses have had on their 10 year old daughter. They mention how technology inspired their daughter, noting how she’s recently shared her excitement to pursue tech & future tech innovation/leadership aspirations. Having had initial tech exposure via StreetCode’s courses and mentor support not only contributed to achieving her goals, but spurred her own interests and creativity — with goals to build a game on Roblox, have it published and have her friends play.

Encouraging girls and women to contribute to the increasing representation in the field is vital for the future of the sector. Angie adds, “She was often the only Black girl in her coding classes and to come to StreetCode and seeing other people who look like her made both her and I more comfortable. I hope to see a future where she can live out her dreams and not be limited by her gender or by her ethnicity and that she has the same opportunities as everyone else.”
